Formed in 2003, the Compassvale Primary School Brass Band has made significant progress. Under the dedicated guidance of a group of instructors led by Mr Simon Ng, the Band was awarded the MOE’s Programme for School-Based Excellence (PSE) in 2009. The PSE is awarded to schools and sustainable programme in a specified area.
Our brass band first achieved the distinction of attaining a Gold Award in the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging(Brass Band) in 2004, within a year of its formation. The brass band went to sustain the Gold Award in the subsequent years when the biennial competition was held in 2006 and 2008. The brass band has also established itself at international competitions.
In November 2004, the band participated in the Australian Academy’s Festival of Music held annually in Brisbane. The band won the First Prize in both the heats and the finals of the competition. The brass section of the band was also named the Best Brass Section in the competition. In June 2007, the band attained the Gold with Honours standard and emerged as the Overall Champion at the 2nd International Children Music Championship in Hong Kong. In July 2010, the band went to Sydney, Australia, to participate in the Annual New South Wales School Band Festival and clinched the Gold Award in the Premiere Category.
Other memorable performances include the National Day Celebration Open House at the Istana, the 4th Band Convention organized by the Ministry of Education’s Co-Curricular Activities Branch where we were the only primary school band in attendance, the PSC Nite Variety Show at Mediacorp Studios where we performed for a live telecast and the PAP Community Foundation Punggol Education Centres Sports Day at Hougang Stadium. Due to the band’s impressive performances at the opening ceremony of the International Confederation of Principals 2009 and at the Esplanade Concert Hall on 6 July 2009, the band was also invited to perform at the SIP Awards and Gala Dinner in 2009. We also performed at he Punggol North Street Parade, an annual community event held conjuction with the Racial Harmony month in July 2010.
