National Education & Social Studies

National Education

To spark further interest in National Education (NE) related matters among our students, the National Education and Social Studies Department has been rolling out a fortnightly sharing since 2014. The sharing entitled “A Small Dose of NE” caters to both the students and teachers. Each sharing will be about a significant current or historic event pertaining to Singapore.

Compassvale Primary School commemorates the 4 core NE events which have been identified as defining moments in Singapore's history. The aim is to entrench these events and the images they evoke in the consciousness of each successive generation.

Total Defence Day

The school commemorates Total Defence Day on 15 February annually to mark Singapore's fall to the Japanese in 1942. Total Defence Day serves to remind our students that Singapore is defensible and is worth defending, and we ourselves must defend Singapore.

International Friendship Day

The school commemorates International Friendship Day on the third working Friday of Term 2. International Friendship Day is a day dedicated to the understanding of Singapore's relations with neighbouring countries and beyond. It aims to sensitise our students towards the geo-political realities inherent in Singapore, as well as nurture in them the spirit of friendship and collaboration among different people.

Racial Harmony Day

The school commemorates Racial Harmony Day on 21st July each year. On this day in 1964, Singapore saw racial riots. Racial Harmony Day serves to remind our students that social division costs us dearly and that race and religion are potential fault-lines in Singapore society. It is a day for schools to reflect on, and celebrate our success as a harmonious nation and society built on a rich diversity of cultures and heritages.

National Day Observance Ceremony

National Day marks our separation from Malaysia, and our emergence as an independent country in the community of nations. Since 1998, a National Day Observance Ceremony was introduced in schools in Singapore. This Ceremony aims to bring to the students a greater sense of the historical importance and solemnity of National Day.

Learning Journeys

Teachers and students embark on learning journeys together to extend and enrich the educational experience. Besides helping to make real and concrete what has been learnt in schools, Learning Journeys will broaden the mental horizons of students and contribute to their total development.

Social Studies
Social Studies at the primary level aims to inculcate in the students from a very early age a sense of belonging to the community and country and cultivate the right instincts for reinforcing social cohesion. Incorporating the four disciplines of History, Geography, Sociology and Economics, the subject enables students to have a better understanding of their social world in the 21st century which will help them to participate effectively in the society and environment in which they live.

Although Social Studies is a non-examination subject for all levels, assessment will still be necessary to monitor the students' progress and evaluate the effectiveness of the Social Studies instructional programme. We gather feedback on the students' learning through a variety of both formal and non-formal modes of assessment.
